Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is a cricket team that competes in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and is based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. founded in 2008 , the team competes in its home games at Chennai’s M. A. Chidambaram Stadium. India Cement Company, via holding company Chennai Super Kings Cricket Ltd, owns the team. The team’s owners’ involvement in the 2013 IPL betting case resulted in a two-year suspension from the IPL beginning in July 2015, and it won the title in its 2018 comeback season. MS Dhoni serves as the team’s captain, and Stephen Fleming is the head coach. CSK became the country’s first unicorn sports organisation in January 2022.
The Super Kings have the highest victory percentage (58.98%) among all IPL teams and have won the league’s championship four times (in 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021). They have made the most playoff appearances (eleven) and IPL Final appearances (nine), respectively.
Also, they triumphed in the 2010 and 2014 Champions League Twenty20. One of the most lucrative IPL franchises, the Super Kings are predicted to have a brand value of about 732 crore (nearly $104 million) in 2019.
Name, crest, logo, and colours
To honour the emperors of the Tamil empire, the Chennai franchise gave the team the name Chennai Super Kings. Particularly in Tamil Nadu, southern India frequently uses the word “super.” The team’s name is also derived from the “Coromandel King” brand of India Cements
The team name is depicted in blue beside an orange roaring lion’s head on the logo. The crown that appears above the team name is the same one that appears in the Coromandel King brand logo. Since the lion is the ruler of the jungle, the roaring lion logo, in the opinion of the logo designers, reflects the team name. The logo’s elements represent a number of characteristics, including vitality, youth, a commitment to excellence, and a fiery attitude.
The primary colour of the team is yellow, and the jersey has stripes of blue and orange on either side. In addition to the major sponsor’s logo, the jersey features the roaring lion emblem in the shirt’s centre. With the exception of the sponsor placement, the basic design of the jersey has not changed since the first season. Reebok produced the team’s uniforms up until 2014; starting in 2015, Australian apparel and sports gear manufacturer Spartan produces the uniforms.
The team’s anthem is “Whistle Podu,” a composition by Aravind-Shankar (duo of Aravind Murali and Jaishankar Iyer). Although though the song was initially made for YouTube in 2008, it got famous throughout the 2009 campaign and eventually became the team’s anthem. The street dance known as dappangutthu, which is particularly popular among some communities in Tamil Nadu, is depicted in the song’s music video.
The Super Kings paid $1.5 million for Mahendra Singh Dhoni at the 2008 players’ auction, who was the captain of the Indian limited-overs team in 2008. The primary sponsor of CSK is TVS Eurogrip, a brand of TVS Srichakra Ltd. that produces tyres for two- and three-wheeled vehicles. In November 2021, the company received official word that it would be a Principle Partner of the CSK for the IPL seasons of 2022, 2023, and 2024. According to reports, the deal is valued more than 100 crore. According to the agreement, the TVS Eurogrip logo will be shown on the front of the CSK matchday shirts in place of the Myntra brand, which served as the primary front-of-shirt sponsor for the IPL 2021. Moreover, co-branded fan engagement campaigns are part of the collaboration.
