Punjab Kings (PBKS) will take on the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the second game of the IPL 2023 on Saturday (April 1) at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. Both teams will like to get their IPL campaign off to a winning start.

Shikhar Dhawan has been appointed the new captain of the Kings. Before the mini-auction last year, the Kings released a total of nine cricketers, including former skipper Mayank Agarwal, Odean Smith, and Sandeep Sharma. The Kings shelled out INR 18.5 crores to have Sam Curran in the squad, and he became the most expensive player in auction history. Jonny Bairstow will miss this year because the ECB have not issued a NOC to him. Matthew Short, the second-highest run-scorer in BBL 2022-23, has been roped in place of Bairstow.

With six victories from 14 games, the Knight Riders placed seventh in their previous campaign. Nitish Rana has been designated captain for the time being after Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out for the team’s opening five games this season. Before the mini-auction, they made the decision to keep just 14 players and release the other 15. Lockie Ferguson, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and Shardul Thakur from the Gujarat Titans were swapped. They made some intriguing decisions at the auction table  to acquire David Wiese, Shakib Al Hasan, N Jagadeesan, and Litton Das.

Let’s take a close look at the projected starting XI, team news, weather forecast, and much more before the action-packed game begins.

Time – 3.30 PM IST, April 1, Saturday.

Venue: Mohali, PUNJAB

The first IPL game to be held in Mohali since 2019 will take place there. The available bounce has made it historically a surface that favors pace. Overnight and n Saturday afternoon, rain is predicted. Mohali’s pitch has a reputation as a high-scoring area because batters love its great bounce and carry. So, run scoring is probably going to be helped by this pitch. Yet, because of the favorable circumstances, the pacers will also have a chance to acquire some early purchase in the first few overs. A balanced battle between bat and ball is anticipated on the Mohali field, making it an interesting possibility for cricket fans.

Toss and Impact Player

Punjab Kings

Possible bat-first XI: 1 Shikhar Dhawan (capt), 2 Prabhsimran Singh, 3 Bhanuka Rajapaksa, 4 Jitesh Sharma (wk), 5 Sikandar Raza, 6 Shahrukh Khan, 7 Sam Curran, 8 Rishi Dhawan, 9 Harpreet Brar, 10 Rahul Chahar, 11 Arshdeep Singh.

If Punjab elects to bat first, they are limited to choosing just three foreign players—Rajapaksa, Raza, and Curran—and adding Ellis as Rajapaksa’s Impact Player for the second innings. Raj Bawa could be substituted for someone who has already been removed in the first innings if they find themselves needing an extra batter and still have six bowling choices available.

Possible bowl-first XI: 1 Shikhar Dhawan (capt), 2 Prabhsimran Singh, 3 Jitesh Sharma (wk), 4 Sikandar Raza, 5 Shahrukh Khan, 6 Sam Curran, 7 Rishi Dhawan, 8 Harpreet Brar, 9 Rahul Chahar, 10 Nathan Ellis, 11 Arshdeep Singh.

If Punjab bowl first, replacing Ellis or Chahar at No. 3 with Rajapaksa as the Impact Player enhances their batting while chasing.

Sam Curran was bought for the highest bid ever at an IPL auction - INR 18.5 croreKolkata Knight Riders

Possible bat-first XI: 1 N Jagadeesan, 2 Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), 3 Venkatesh Iyer, 4 Nitish Rana (capt), 5 Rinku Singh, 6 Andre Russell, 7 Sunil Narine, 8 Shardul Thakur 9 Lockie Ferguson, 10 Umesh Yadav, 11 Varun Chakravarthy/ Suyash Sharma.

As KKR has a full lineup of all-rounders and bats until position eight, they may consider adding a bowler in the second inning.

Possible bowl-first XI: 1 N Jagadeesan (wk), 2 Venkatesh Iyer, 3 Nitish Rana (capt), 4 Rinku Singh, 5 Mandeep Singh, 6 Andre Russell, 7 Shardul Thakur, 8 Sunil Narine, 9 Lockie Ferguson, 10 Umesh Yadav, 11 Varun Chakravarthy/Suyash Sharma.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz or David Wiese could be used as the Impact Player in the second innings if KKR names just three foreign players if they bowl first. If they need a second bowling option, they might also think about using Wiese in the first innings.

Despite being one of the most reliable batsmen in the IPL, Shikhar Dhawan has failed to reach a fifty in his 11 games as skipper. The only batter to do so in seven straight seasons is him.

In the most recent Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Prabhsimran Singh finished third with 320 runs with a strike rate of 142 and an average of 53.30. Among Indian players, Jitesh Sharma has the third-highest T20 strike rate (148), trailing only Prithvi Shaw (149) and Suryakumar Yadav (149). (152).

After experimenting with six different lineups the previous year, KKR will be desperate for some strong starts. Their openers had the lowest average in IPL 2022 (15.8), much below Gujarat Titans, the second-worst team, who averaged 26.40 for the first wicket.

Both sides seek to reverse the situation this year after having less than stellar performances the previous year. For their IPL 2023 campaign to get off to a successful start, they will need to fire simultaneously. Expect the Knight Riders to prevail since they appear to be a well-oiled machine.

Shreyas Iyer’s injury earlier caused KKR a significant setback. The new captain of the two-time IPL champions is Nitish Rana. For the Knight Riders, players like Shakib Al Hasan, Andre Russell, and Rinku Singh would be essential in a run-chase.

Livingstone, Raza, and Shahrukh Khan will all give notable performances, which Punjab will also eagerly anticipate. While Khan has been reliable the past several seasons in the lower middle order, Curran is also a useful batter in the lower order.

Even though Punjab Kings are playing at home, we don’t see any obvious advantages for the side. On paper, KKR appear to be considerably better based on team strength. Every position has seasoned players that have been a part of the KKR camp for a considerable amount of time. The bowling assault is diverse, and the batting order is strong. One of Punjab Kings’ top batters is absent, while other players aren’t at their best right now. Overall, it appears like KKR will win this match and will start as the favorites in our match prediction.
