Attention cricket fans! Hold on to your hats because we have some exciting news for you! England captain Ben Stokes has once again been named Wisden’s leading cricketer in the world for the third time in just four years. That’s right, three out of four years! What an incredible achievement for the 31-year-old all-rounder.
Stokes has been an integral part of the English cricket team, having transformed their fortunes in the Test matches and played a starring role in the T20 World Cup final win against Pakistan in November. In fact, his contributions to the team have been so significant that he was appointed captain last April, and England have since won an impressive 10 out of their past 12 matches.
But Stokes is not the only one receiving recognition for his outstanding performances on the field. His England teammates Ben Foakes and Matthew Potts have been named among the five Cricketers of the Year, alongside New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell, and India women’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur.
According to Wisden editor Lawrence Booth, “It’s hard to think of any other cricketer who could have transformed his team’s fortunes so suddenly as Ben Stokes.” And we couldn’t agree more! Stokes has truly revolutionized the way the game is played, and his forceful performances with both the bat and ball have been nothing short of extraordinary.
But the recognition doesn’t stop there. The leading women’s cricketer in the world, Beth Mooney, has been named for the second time in three years. She was part of an Australian team that won World Cups in both 50-over and 20-over formats, as well as gold at the Commonwealth Games.
And let’s not forget about the new Wisden Trophy, which was awarded to England batter Jonny Bairstow for his outstanding individual Test performance of the year – his twin hundreds in the record-breaking win over India at Edgbaston in July.
To all the cricket fans out there, this is a momentous occasion that deserves to be celebrated! So, let’s raise our glasses and toast to the incredible achievements of these talented cricketers. We can’t wait to see what they have in store for us next!
